Selenium disulfide

Selenium disulfide (SeS₂) is a binary inorganic compound of selenium and sulfur. It is obtained by the action of hydrogen sulfide on a solution of selenous acid. It has a yellowish-red color. Does not dissolve in water.

pharmachologic effect

It has a pronounced antifungal and antiseborrheic effect.
Selenium disulfide, when applied to the skin, has a triple effect:

• Cytostatic – regulates the process of renewal of epidermal cells by normalizing the function of the sebaceous glands.
• Fungicidal – inhibits the growth of yeast fungi of the genus Malasseria and destroys the environment favorable for their excessive reproduction.
• Keratolytic – normalizes the exfoliation of dead epidermal cells and prevents the appearance of dandruff.

Mechanism of action

Selenium disulfide blocks the growth of epidermal cells and epithelial follicles, reduces the production of corneocytes. The selenium disulfide molecule, attaching to the cell wall of the fungus, prevents its division and, therefore, reproduction.

Application

Dermatomycoses, especially pityriasis versicolor, seborrheic dermatitis of the scalp, dandruff, seborrheic psoriasis, folliculitis.
Selenium disulfide can be used in cosmetics such as shampoos, pastes, creams and soaps.

Selenium disulfide can be used in products for the care of problematic and oily skin of the face and body, prone to the formation of pimples and acne, as it regulates the functioning of the sebaceous glands, reducing the secretion of sebum (sebum), and effectively inhibits the activity of Propionibacterium bacteria Acnes, which provokes the formation of pimples and acne on the skin, prevents the formation of comedones and has a good drying and cleansing effect.

The presence of selenium disulfide in shampoos is strictly limited: the permissible dose of selenium disulfide is no more than 1%. The use of leave-in products containing this component is not recommended. Use only for external use.
