Polysorbate 20
Description
Polysorbate 20 (Tween – 20) – polysorbate, monooleate, nonionic surfactant, natural emulsifier obtained from coconut oil. Compared to other polysorbates, polysorbate 20 is milder, making it ideal for use in children’s cosmetics and products for sensitive skin. Adding Polysorbate 20 results in products that are less dense and less viscous than Polysorbate 80. It is used for lighter fragrances and fatty oils, while Polysorbate 80 is used for heavier essential oils.
Polysorbate 20 is a clear yellow-green viscous liquid with a boiling point above 100C. The pH level of a 15 aqueous solution is 5-7.
Characteristics of polysorbate 20:
- emulsifier, solubilizer, stabilizer;
- creates a softening effect;
- effectively “combines” the water and oil phases;
- moisturizing and astringent effect;
- excellent sensory characteristics;
- soothing effect on the skin;
- dissolves fatty/waxy secretions on human skin followed by their gentle removal;
- increases the slip of the product;
- moderate antistatic and conditioner.
