Lanolin Alcohol

Description

Lanolin alcohol is the non-saponifiable fraction of anhydrous lanolin.

Lanolin alcohols are complex mixtures of cholesterol, lanosterol, agnosterol and their derivatives, as well as straight and branched chain aliphatic alcohols, with an average molecular weight of approximately 370. They are produced by alkaline hydrolysis of lanolin and its further processing.

general characteristics

Name Lanolin alcohol
CAS No. 8027-33-6
Synonyms wool wax alcohol

Application

  • The pale color and mild aroma make lanolin ideal for use as an emulsifier and stabilizer in cosmetics where natural whiteness and a neutral odor are important;
  • When mixed with cetearyl alcohol, which is an additional stabilizer, and mineral oil or petroleum jelly to change consistency, lanolin alcohol can act as a functional component in so-called absorption bases;
  • Lanolin alcohol promotes favorable wound healing;
  • The emulsifying properties of lanolin alcohol are stable over a wide pH range and can be used in acidic or alkaline W/O emulsions as a hair bleaching agent;
  • Lanolin alcohol can function as a carrier system for the delivery of pharmacologically active substances through the skin.

Product Features

  • Free lanolin alcohols have stronger surface activity than esters. They are a source of high water absorption capacity of anhydrous lanolin;
  • Free and purified lanolin alcohols are powerful non-ionic water-in-oil (W/O) emulsifiers.
