Description

L-Ergothioneine is a sulfur-containing amino acid that is synthesized naturally in fungi and mycobacteria in the soil.
CAS number: 497-30-3

Description of action:

Ergothioneine can accumulate to high levels in certain tissues that undergo high levels of oxidation, such as red blood cells, respiratory epithelium, liver and kidneys.
It acts as an antioxidant, has a strong ability to scavenge reactive oxygen species, and is known to scavenge free radicals as a stress-relieving mechanism in nerve cells.

Functions of ergothioneine:

  • Oxidative stability (mitochondrial recovery, cellular accumulation and long-term antioxidant effect)
  • Anti-photoaging (reduces MMP-1 gene expression)
  •  Skin whitening (inhibition of tyrosinase activity)
  • Treatment of neurodegenerative diseases (protection of mitochondrial DNA from superoxide, which is formed during the electron transport cycle)
  • Treatment of kidney disease and cancer (accumulation of Erogothionein in various organs).

Application and dosage:

Ergothioneine is used in the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries (in the form of essences, lotions, face creams).

The recommended dose for cosmetic use is 0.01%~3%.
